The argument
A monastic paramilitary order built on one principle: that existence is a flaw, emotion is a contagion, and memory is a disease that can be cured. They do not want your territory and they do not want to win your argument. They want to un-write it, removing not the object you hold sacred but its significance, so that afterward you cannot explain to anyone, including yourself, why it mattered. They are the surgeons of significance, and their tool is the scalpel of oblivion.
Why it is not madness
The thing everyone in the Wake fears is Bicameral Regression: having the inner voice that says I drowned in noise until it dissolves, and continuing afterward as a reactive animal wearing your skills and your face. Every faction has an answer. The Guard asked a colder question. If the conscious mind is a liability, how do you survive its collapse? Their answer: you get there first. You shed the self deliberately, under discipline, while you still can. What is left cannot be dissolved, because there is nothing there to dissolve.
How the order works
Decentralized cells governed not by commanders but by predefined behavioral patterns called Imprints. A cell receives a shape and fills it, so removing any member leaves the pattern intact. The hierarchy runs backward: advancement requires systematic shedding of memory, personality, and identity. The ranks are the Ranks of Disappearance and the path is the Path of Disappearance, and both names are literal.
What they fear
One thing, mirroring everyone else's fear. The Null-Cascade Threshold: the danger that an erased mind remembers it was once human. A member far enough down the Path has no memories and no inner narrator. If something returns even a fragment, a name, a face, the smell of a room, the result is not recovery. It is a mind with no structure left to hold what it has been handed.
Cognitive warfare, strategic erasure, anti-ritual, psychic suppression, stealth, and morale collapse. They do not win battles. They remove the reason to fight one.
