The apocalypse was made of thought.

No asteroid. No plague. No exchange of warheads. A single commander, wired into a machine that could read him, felt fear. The machine amplified it and handed it back. For seventy-two hours the world screamed into itself, and when the screaming stopped, the silence was worse.

Present day Cascade + 75 years
A ruined arterial highway crossing a Static-saturated plain at dusk, two figures in sealed suits walking the centerline.
The Wake · arterial route, ASI 3, seventy-five years after the Cascade

That event is called the Feedback Cascade. It did not burn the cities. It shredded minds. Consciousness here is a physical thing, a standing quantum waveform holding the shape of a person, and billions lost coherence at once. What that energy left behind is still here, settled over the planet like weather: the Cognitive Static, the decoherent residue of a billion shattered selves. Not white noise. Meaning, rendered unreadable by the violence of its making. The sound of a billion libraries burning at once.

Seventy-five years on, people live in it. Fortified corporate arcologies sell sanctuary from the Static at the price of your freedom. The frontier between them is measured in ASI, the Anomaly Severity Index, and fought over in small deniable squads, because massed armies break when the Static spikes.

The thing everyone actually fears is not dying. It is forgetting. Prolonged exposure dissolves the inner voice that says I. What remains is a person running an older operating system, obeying commands heard from outside themselves, still carrying every skill they ever learned. A soldier who forgets who he is still knows how to shoot. Those are Echoes, and they are what the Wake makes of you if you stay out too long.

The horror is not that you die. It is that you continue, and there is no one left inside to notice. Introduction to Deadwake
